Handloom Punja Durrie Floor Carpet

This Handloom Punja Durrie Carpet represents the rich weaving tradition of Madhya Pradesh, crafted using age-old techniques passed down through generations. Known for its durability and distinctive geometric patterns, this durrie is handwoven by skilled artisans using the traditional Punja technique.

The craft requires a simple yet efficient setup using a ‘punja’, a ‘pit loom’, or basic horizontal bars, enabling artisans to weave with precision and ease. Durrie making primarily involves two techniques — the Punja technique and the traditional pit loom with a fly shuttle. The Punja technique, being simpler, allows for faster and more flexible weaving.

The process reflects a collaborative craft tradition, where cotton yarn is often handspun by women artisans, while dyeing is carried out by men, preserving a balanced and community-driven production system.

Its sturdy construction, textured weave, and reversible usability make it a practical yet aesthetic addition to any living space.
