About this place
The Bridge to Mayal Lyang is a six-day, community-led journey through Lower and Upper Dzongu—the sacred homeland of the Lepcha people in North Sikkim. Moving slowly through villages, forests, farms and rivers, travellers experience Dzongu through the people who call it home. The journey includes conversations with farmers, artisans, cultural practitioners and host families whose lives and work reflect a deep relationship with the land. Participants visit a nettle-weaving centre, meet indigenous seed keepers, learn about Lepcha food and farming, and interact with Padma Shri Jorden Lepcha, known for preserving the traditional Sumok Thyaktuk hat-making practice. Village walks, monastery trails, riverside picnics, local meals and evenings of folk music create space for deeper cultural exchange. Accommodation is provided in small, community-run homestays in Lower and Upper Dzongu. Designed for a small group, the experience prioritises meaningful interaction, local participation and a respectful approach to the cultural and ecological landscape. This is not a conventional sightseeing tour. It is an invitation to experience Dzongu through its people, their stories and their enduring relationship with Mayal Lyang.
