Shobhabazar and Kumartuli are best known for Durga idols and the artisans who create them, but this neighbourhood has a much wider history to tell. This two-hour heritage walk explores the world of the influential families, merchants, patrons, reformers, and temple founders who helped shape Shobhabazar, alongside the craftsmen whose traditions continue to define Kumortuli. As we walk through its lanes, we'll visit historic temples, old residences, riverside ghats, and other lesser-known landmarks, uncovering stories of faith, patronage, art, and community that have unfolded here over generations. At the heart of the walk is Kumortuli, where the making of Durga idols remains one of Kolkata's most enduring living traditions. For history enthusiasts, researchers, academics, and curious city explorers, this walk offers a deeper understanding of one of North Kolkata's most significant historic neighbourhoods.
