About this place
Tucked away in the dense forests of southern Chhattisgarh, Bastar is home to India's most extraordinary — and least known — festival. Unlike the Ramlila-based Dussehra celebrated across most of India, Bastar Dussehra is a 75-day tribal festival honoring Goddess Danteshwari, marked by ancient rituals, wooden chariots pulled by thousands, and ceremonies that have remained unchanged for centuries. This 5-day, 5-night journey takes you deep into the heart of Bastar — through craft villages where artisans still shape bell-metal and clay by hand, past thundering waterfalls and limestone caves, into Gond and Madia tribal homes for shared meals, and finally into the pulsing, drum-lit heart of Jagdalpur as it hosts one of the world's longest-running festivals. This is not a sightseeing tour. It is a slow, respectful, immersive encounter with a culture that has quietly preserved its own worldview for over 600 years.
