AJC Bose Indian Botanical Garden: An Ecological Heritage Walk, Kolkata tickets

About this place

Step into one of Kolkata’s most remarkable living landscapes and discover the ecological heritage of AJC Bose Botanical Garden—not simply through its plants, but through the stories, landscapes and living systems that have shaped this historic garden. Over a leisurely three-hour walk, we will explore some of the garden’s distinctive spaces—from the Palm Avenue and Butterfly Garden to its old and remarkable trees, shaded avenues and diverse botanical landscapes—while understanding why botanical gardens matter in an increasingly urban world. Along the way, discover the stories behind remarkable trees, learn how trees are named and classified, and explore their cultural, ecological and historical significance. The walk also looks at how a botanical garden functions as a living repository of plant diversity, a space for learning and research, and an important refuge for urban biodiversity. Keep your eyes and ears open as we walk—birdwatching and butterfly watching are an integral part of the experience, offering an opportunity to observe the many forms of life that make the garden more than a collection of plants. This is an invitation to see the Botanical Garden differently: as a living archive of Kolkata’s natural and botanical heritage, where history, science and urban ecology meet.
